Public Libraries: Public Libraries: Alternative Futures Forum - 06 July 2011
A
library forum was held on Wednesday 06 July 2011, at the Central
Institute of Technology. Three respected speakers will discuss
library service and management models in their states, past, present
and future. Develop an understanding of future options available to
Western Australian public libraries based on successful models in South
Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
Geoff
Strempel, Associate Director, Public Library Services, State Library of
South Australia, Department of the Premier and Cabinet
In
his current role Geoff is responsible for providing leadership, support
and services to the State's 130+ public libraries. Annually PLS
purchases over $5M of public library materials for the State’s public
libraries, through an e-procurement system which enables libraries to
choose the stock that is bought for them. Prior to working in this role
Geoff was Manager, Libraries and Arts for the City of Onkaparinga, and
has also worked in special and school libraries. He is currently
studying a Masters in Public Administration, and in his spare time he
serves on committees for a range of professionally related
groups.

Jan Richards, Manager, Central West Libraries New South Wales
Jan
leads a team of 64 staff and 75 volunteers and has built an innovative,
customer focused service. Jan is actively committed to her profession
and her community and is currently Chairman Public Libraries Advisory
Committee at ALIA ,is a former President of ALIA and Director at Mentor
As Anything. She has worked with future leaders of the Australian and
New Zealand Library industry through her role as a mentor at the Aurora
Leadership Institute. Jan has been a leader of the NSW @ your library
campaign, engaging and inspiring the State’s 97 public library services
and has a keen interest in lobbying and advocacy and marketing of
libraries.

Jane Cowell, Director Public and Indigenous Library Services, State Library of Queensland
Jane
joined State Library as Director Public and Indigenous Library Services
in May 2010. In this role, Jane’s priorities include driving reviews of
grant funding methodology and service delivery models for public
libraries; growing the capacity of public libraries; overseeing the
establishment of a state-wide literacy framework, and focusing on
strengthening advocacy for libraries. Jane has over 20 years experience
in local government, as Manager Library Services, Caboolture Shire
Council and Hinterland Services Librarian in Caloundra City Council.
Since 2008, Jane worked as a Senior Consultant in AEC Group Consultancy,
undertaking a great variety of library consultancies all over
Australia. Jane’s areas of special interest and expertise include
innovation in library and outreach services; community facility
management; strategic planning; reengineering of library operations and
public library design.
