The Port Phillip Herald was one of the earliest newspapers published in the then township of Melbourne soon after it was founded in the colony of Victoria in the early 19th century. It became the precursor of the Herald and Weekly Times newspaper empire, now part of The News Corporation. The Paper of Record website contains all 57,000 pages of the Port Phillip Herald published between 1840-1880. But NOTE - it is not perfect.  Some of the original papers were poorly printed, or have not been looked after as well as they should and some pages are hard to read.  It is searchable by keyword, making it a valuable tool.
