Subject Guide Maps
The map collection of the State Library is the best publicly accessible collection of maps and atlases available in Perth. It is available on the first floor of the State Library. The collection holds maps from all the Australian state mapping agencies. It is rich in early maps from the United Kingdom which is useful for genealogists. The collection includes current travel maps of countries and major cities around the world, especially south-east Asia. Western Australian maps are collected and held in the JS Battye Library of Western Australian History on the 3rd floor of the State Library.
MAP CATALOGUE
The easiest and quickest method of locating maps in the collection is to perform a keyword search on the State Library’s online catalogue. The majority of maps received in recent years will be recorded.
Search the Catalogue
- Click Search our catalogue
- Click Maps
- Click Keyword
- Enter the place name of the map you wish to view as a keyword eg Hemel Hempstead, Mongolia, Quebec City etc
- Select the title that most closely matches by clicking on the underlined title
- Scroll through the records by selecting Previous Page or Next Page
- Click Return to Browse if you wish to view your original list
- Read the information in the LOCATION box which has the floor number for the State Library eg 1st Fl, Map Shelves and the call number eg 7899.U4E635.
- Write down the call number eg 7899.U4E635
- Find the map in the map cabinets or if it is an atlas on the book shelves on the first floor in the map corner.
If the Map is in Stack
- If the LOCATION box says Map Stack please click Request (top left)
- Type your name, date you want to read the map and telephone or email address in the box
- Click Submit
- If your request is accepted you will see a message Your request for ..... was successful
- The map will be fetched for you and delivered to the enquiry desk of the floor that the item is held.
USEFUL COLLECTIONS
Street Directories
The
State Library holds street maps for many locations around the
world. The most current Australian street directories are
near the 1st floor reference desk and Western Australian directories
are held on the 3rd floor shelves.
Search the catalogue for street directories
- Click Search our catalogue
- Click Maps
- Click Keyword
- Enter the place name of the street directory you wish to view as a keyword eg London and the word "directories".
- Select the title that most closely matches by clicking on the underlined title
- Scroll through the records by selecting Previous Page or Next Page
- Click Return to Browse if you wish to view your original list

Australian Topographic Maps: 1:100,000 and
1:250,000
The State Library holds the complete
set of 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 topographic maps of Australia produced
by Geoscience Australia. To find the map number for the area
that you are interested in, check the correct gazetteer
first:
- 1:100,000 Master names file [microform] : [Australia 1:250 000 and 1:100 000 master names gazetteer - Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (1st Fl, Map Shelves, 2750)
- 1:250,000 Australia 1:250,000 map series : gazetteer - prepared by the Division of National Mapping, Department of Minerals and Energy (1st Fl, Map Shelves, 2750)
Loans and Photocopying
The State Library’s map and atlas collections are not for loan. Please check the Australian Copyright Council Maps and Charts information sheet for copyright information.
Please see staff for assistance in using photocopiers. There is an A2 photocopier on the first floor which is large enough to copy most maps.
