Archival Plans - Architecture & Heritage

These main series of architectural and heritage plans, pertaining to the built environment, are held by the State Records Office.

Public (Government) Buildings, 1830-1985, WAS 399
These consist of architectural and engineering plans created by the Public Works Department. They include some of the most significant government-owned buildings and works in Western Australia.

Public Buildings (e.g. cinemas, halls), 1926-1992, WAS 1457
These plans were lodged with the Health Department in accordance with the Health Act 1911 (Section 174; Notice of intention to build or open public building).

State Housing, 1930-1950, WAS 1381, AN 150
Series of housing plans produced by the architectural staff of the Workers Homes Board/State Housing Commission.

Building Plans, Local Government; City of Stirling, 1917-1947, AN 63
While most municipalities had the plans of houses in their area deposited with them, the only series of note which has so far come to the State Records Office is from the City of Stirling. Plans are held of houses built in the City of Stirling (then called the Perth Road Board) for the period 29 August 1917 to 30 April 1947.

Commercial Properties in the Perth Central Business District, 1903-1978, WAS 1320
These plans consist of copies of architectural drawings originally lodged with local councils in support of building approvals. They were referred to the State Commissioner for Taxation for valuation purposes. Most of the sets of drawings describe commercial properties. Many of these were constructed in the Perth Central Business District in the 1930s and have since been demolished.

Licensed Premises, 1922- , WAS 2237
Certified copies of plans of licensed premises.

Metropolitan Sewerage Surveys, 1910-1954, WAS 634
Plans of the Perth region compiled from field surveys carried out for the extension (or renovation) of the metropolitan sewerage scheme.

Surveyors Field Books and Level Books, 1896- , WAS 84
These field books and level books comprise original sewerage and drainage surveys of the metropolitan area conducted until 1912 by the Public Works Department. The field surveys recorded in these books form the basis for the Sewerage plans (see above).
