Frequently Asked Questions
- How will customers log in?
It is very similar to some of the online databases. Customers will select their particular location and enter their library card number and PIN. Libraries may decide that customers who are blacklisted, expired, owe more than a certain amount in fines etc will not be able to access the database. - What titles will be available?
The collection will launch with several thousand e-books and a small collection of audiobooks. The majority of the titles will be adult fiction but there will also be some non-fiction and young adult titles to select. Junior items will be added at a later date. In addition, some 23,000 additional titles will be available through Project Gutenberg. - Will new titles be added?
Yes, new titles will be added to the collection as they become available. - How many items can customers borrow?
Customers can borrow up to 5 titles at a time. Please note this is in addition to any items they borrow from the library itself and Project Gutenberg titles may be borrowed in addition to these limits. - How long are e-books on loan for?
The default loan period is 14 days, however customers can choose 7 or 21 days instead. Project Gutenberg titles have an unlimited loan period. - Can e-books be renewed?
Unfortunately books can't be renewed, however if a customer wishes, they can borrow the title again. - How do customers return items?
At the end of the loan period, the item will "expire" and will no longer be accessible to the customer. - Can e-books be reserved?
Yes. Customers can reserve up to 5 titles at a time. When an e-book becomes available, customers will be notified by email to collect their items within 3 days otherwise they will lose their reservation. - Are there any e-book readers which cannot be used?
Unfortunately at present the Kindle cannot access library e-books. This is a licensing issue with Amazon and is beyond the control of library staff. A list of compatible readers includes nearly every other e-book reader on the market as well as iPads, smartphones, tablets, computers etc. - What other help is available online?
The Western Australia Public Libraries Digital Media Collection website has a comprehensive help section with tutorial videos, user guides and further information for customers. - Can customers download e-books in the library?
Customers with an e-book reader, tablet etc may be able to connect to the library WiFi (if available) and download e-books. - Why can't I find the titles I want?
The range of available titles is limited by the publishers reticence to deal with consolidated distributors. Even with popular authors, their latest releases may not be available.
