The State Library of Western Australia provides access to print and electronic resources which can assist you in monitoring and tracking existing investments or potential investments. Electronic Resources

There are a number of electronic resources available for business research in the State Library. Search results from these resources may be printed; downloaded to a thumb drive or CD-ROM; or emailed your own computer (subject to the licence agreements and software functionality of individual databases). Electronic resources are also available, with membership, from the National Library of Australia. Of particular use to personal investors are:

  • Annual Reports Online
     
    Aspect Financial Pty Ltd. This research tool offers access to Australian company annual reports dating back to 1995. It also provides access to the full documentation of Australian Stock Exchange announcements from October 1998 to today including prospectuses. These announcements are updated continually throughout the day.
    Access: available with membership from the eResources of the National Library of Australia (NLA).
    Available for document delivery from the NLA to Australian libraries. 
  • The IBISWorld database offers a collection of industry market research, industry risk ratings and company research. This source of Australian business information provides independent and accurate research on over 500 industries and Australia's top 2000 companies.
    Access: available on-site at the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) and with SLWA membership from your own computer.
  • Factiva
     Factiva (Dow Jones and Proquest) provides access to global news and business information as well as full text coverage of major Australian and international newspapers and journals. Same-day news wires, company reports, investment analyst reports, market research reports, country and regional profiles, company profiles, and historical market data are also provided. Coverage of individual publications varies widely.

  • Business Source Premier (EBSCOHost)
     
    Contains information from the international business literature relating to all aspects of business and industry. It includes full text articles, industry reports and company profiles.
    Access: available at the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) and with SLWA membership from your own computer or mobile device. 

Internet sources

Business Spectator latest business and finance news online and updated daily. Registration required. Includes industry blogs.

Bristlemouth Blog hosted by Intelligent Investor. Issues and tips are dscussed and offered by active investors.

History of Australian Corporate Law published by the Melbourne Law School Research Service and the Centre for Corporate Law and Securities Legislation. Provides links to key documents in the development of Australian corporate law.

  • Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Includes information on listed companies, markets and shareholder education.
  • Moneysmart (ASIC) The consumer website of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). Offers financial tips and safety checks.
  • Sharity Sharity works with Australian companies to facilitate gifting shares to charity.
  • ShareGift Australia ShareGift Australia provides Australian shareholders with the opportunity to sell their shares without brokerage fees and donate the proceeds to charity.

  • Investopedia Useful online stock and financial dictionary with clear definitions of most terms. Offers related articles with search results.
  • World Federation of Exchanges Provides a central point for the world securities industry and for the exchanges themselves. It provides details on all exchanges and links to each exchange site.

Commercial Internet Sites

There are many commercial Internet sites that allow you to monitor your investments. Most provide fee based services to track your investments and provide their latest information and analysis however some also provide a limited amount of free information.
