Keyboard Instruments
The Collection
Scores
The keyboard music collection is predominantly for piano but you will also find a good solid collection of organ music for both manual and electronic organ, for harpsichord and clavichord, harmonium and for piano accordion. As in other score collections in the library, both original pieces beyond the range of the standard repertoire and arrangements are collected. Various editions, particularly of standard works, enhance the value of the collection as an adjunct to performance study. Tutors, studies, exercises and sight-reading scores can all assist the budding player. The State Library collects most works listed from Grade 4 and above in the AMEB syllabuses for Piano, Piano for Leisure, Organ and Electronic Organ. Keyboard instruments are also represented in chamber ensembles where a continuo part is played.
Reference Material
The reference collection of books, journals and on-line databases about music includes material on the history of the various standard keyboard instruments and includes the more unusual mechanical instruments such as pianolas and player pianos, information on construction, tuning, maintenance and rebuilding, biographies, performance technique, teaching, repertoire, literature and bibliographies as well as good access to analytical works.
Recordings
We hold a collection of CDs and LPs that can be listened to on-site and the standard keyboard repertoire has been collected. You can also listen to tracks using the on-line database Naxos Music Library. There is a small classical loan collection of audio cassettes available.
