Plucked Strings

The Collection

There are extensive resources at the State Library available for the string-plucker. Classical and rock guitarists will find an expansive repertoire and the harpists, lutenists, mandolinists and those who choose to pluck the zither, bouzouki, balalaika, banjo, ukulele or dulcimer will also find something of interest.

Scores for Loan

The score collection encompasses the full range of styles from a variety of tutors for all instruments, studies, collections of original pieces and arrangements, as well as tab, scale and chord books. The styles include classical, rock, jazz, world and flamenco amongst others. We collect most works listed from Grade 4 and above in the Australian Music Examinations Board syllabuses for Guitar and Harp. All plucked string music can be found on the shelves at the classification T.

Reference Material

The reference collection of books, journals and electronic resources includes histories of the instruments, mainly guitar, but covering dulcimers, harps, auto-harps and some more unusual instruments such as the koto and the pipa, information on construction, tuning and maintenance, biographies of composers and performers, as well as bibliographies.

Recordings

We hold a collection of CDs and LPs that can be listened to on-site. Recordings of different performances of standard works are collected in order to enhance the student's listening experience. You can also listen to tracks using the on-line database Naxos Music Library. There is a small classical and jazz loan collection of audio cassettes available.
