Woodwinds

Whether you're a budding James Galway, John Harle, Benny Goodman or Grover Washington Jr., the State Library's collection of woodwind scores and information on the whole spectrum of instruments has something for you. Music for the standard orchestral instruments (flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet and bassoon) is supplemented by material for recorder, saxophone and the more unusual bagpipes, harmonica, tin whistle and panpipes.

The Collection

Scores for Loan

The score collection encompasses the full range of styles from Bohm and Moyse studies and methods, orchestral excerpts, sonatas, concerto reductions and jazz. The collection includes music originally written for these instruments and arrangements of other works. We collect most works listed from Grade 4 and above in the Australian Music Examinations Board syllabuses for recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone. Chamber music for wind and mixed ensembles is well represented. All woodwind music can be found on the shelves at the classification V.

Reference Material

The reference collection of books, journals and electronic resources includes volumes on instrument making, maintenance and repair, technique, composers and performers, history, analysis and bibliographies. You can even find a book on how to play the gum-leaf!

Recordings

We hold a collection of CDs and LPs that can be listened to on-site. You can also listen to tracks using the on-line database Naxos Music Library. There is a small classical and jazz loan collection of audio cassettes available.
