FUNHOUSE NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 1999
Hi, and welcome to the October FUNHOUSE newsletter.
One of the most enjoyable things for me about Children’s Book Week was meeting some of the kids who have contributed to FUNHOUSE. I went to Warnbro Community Library and ran two writing workshops there. Talking to the kids during a break I found that two of them had sent in stories to the FUNHOUSE KID’S WRITING section. I had even awarded one of them a prize for her writing!
It’s the strangest feeling, meeting someone in that way. Over the internet they are a name and a story. But there they were: smiling, talking about their writing and having a cup of tea and a biscuit with me. It was great!
At last the new book is out. REVENGE OF THE THREE BLIND MICE has been released. It’s published by Margaret Hamilton Books and is illustrated by Terry Denton. How lucky am I to get someone as wonderful as Terry to do the pictures for my book! I just love his work!
And … I have a version of REVENGE translated into Danish. It’s weird seeing a book that is all my own words … and I can’t read any of them!
In September I attended a function at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital art gallery. It was special for me because it featured what has become known as the MASON JUDY collection. There are thirty beautiful paintings by Western Australian artist Robert Juniper. They were painted for my first book - MASON JUDY - which was published in 1977. The entire collection is owned by the Swan Brewery and hasn’t been seen by the public for about twenty years.
I was asked to speak at the opening and it was great to see Robert Juniper there. I remember the times that I visited Robert in his studio and watched his wonderful paintings bringing my first book to life.
At the moment I’m reading HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE by J K Rowling. It’s been hugely popular right round the world. And reading it, I can see why. It’s just so much fun. I bet someone makes it into a film before not too long. Now that computers can do almost anything the crazy happenings in HARRY POTTER would make a terrific movie.
This month’s story is titled JANE STEPPED ON AN ANT. If you let your imagination run wild you could come up with a truly amazing story. Click onto the FINISH THE STORY and see for yourself. Remember, if you write a good one e mail it in to FUNHOUSE and we’ll publish it on the KID’S WRITING section.
Have fun with JANE STEPPED ON AN ANT and …
Keep writing!
Trevor
