November 1999

There are exciting things a foot for the LisKidz web site of which Funhouse is a part. Elements of Funhouse will remain with LisKidz but dare we say - "watch this space" - for new happenings.

November is a busy month for young people in Perth, Western Australia.

The 31 October - 5th November is Seniors Week and as it is International Year of Older Persons there will be lots of celebrations. On the 4 November, during Seniors Week, the winners of the Library and Information Service's "Connecting All Ages" writing competition will be announced at a presentation at the State Library. This writing competition was organised to celebrate the International Year of Older Persons.

During this week you might find yourself wanting to explore the world of an older person so you could pop into your local or school library and try out some of these reads.

"A Day 's Work" written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Ronald Himler.

This is a story about immigration, intergenerational love and a shared respect between an older adult and a child. A highly commended picture book.

"Knit Wit" written by Janine Fraser

Nine year old Kevin's Nan loves to knit and she wants to knit him a football jumper . Kevin thinks he will die from embarrassment - nobody from his football team wears a Nan knitted jumper. How can Kevin stop Nan without hurting her feelings?

"Nanna" written by Pamela Freeman

Alex and Di are excited when Nanna comes to live with them but all Nanna wants to do is keep the house tidy and play bowls! Does she care about the family?

"The Bird Woman" written by Irena Sibley

Old Ida lived with her one eyed dog halfway up a mountain. Some people thought she was crazy because she didn't want to sell her orchard and move into a convenient modern unit and she talked to birds. But in the end her beloved birds remained her true friends.

On the 3 November the Western Australian winners of the Nestle Write Around Australia Creative Writing Program will be announced at a presentation being held at the State Library. You might want to check out the Nestle web site at www.writearound.com.au to read some the stories written by 10,11 and 12 year olds across Australia. The national winners will be announced in Sydney on the 30th November.

The Awesome International Children's Festival is happening between the 8-14 November in the City of Perth. The State Library will be hosting film Graffiti workshops and two Film Festivals. Again you might like to check out the new Awesome web site for programme information, games and puzzles at http://awesome.iinet.net.au/

So here's to a fun filled November. Enjoy this month's Funhouse! and don't forget to email us with your stories and thoughts at LisKidz@mail.liswa.wa.gov.au we would love to hear from you!
