Music Awards in Australia

In Australia there are many music competitions, scholarships and awards available to music students in piano, vocal, string and instrumental categories.  The State of Victoria has a significant number of scholarships for interested music students.

Australian Yearbook of Music and Music Education
Chapter 7 of this book includes a useful listing of scholarships and awards available Australia-wide and for a few States. Have a look at this yearbook for a description of the award, prize money and contact details.

Kiss My WAMI Awards
Kiss My WAMI awards are conducted by the Western Australian Music Industry Association to recognise excellence in original Western Australian bands. View the web site for a complete listing and explanation of the voting system for the Kiss My WAMI awards from the Golden WAMI for Contribution to the Industry to the Best Lighting Engineer.

Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards
The Symphony Australia Young Performer Awards is a competition open to classical instrumentalists under 30 years of age. For the winner in each category of keyboard, stringL and instrumental there is a presentation of a Young Performer's Award and a cash prize. The three finalists enter the grand final and the winner becomes the Young Performer of the Year. In 2002, the Symphony Australia Young Vocalists Award will form part of the Australian Singing Competition. The prize will be cash plus concert opportunities. Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia
The Australian Yearbook of Music and Music Education , Chapter 7, gives details of this competition which is held every four years and attracts young pianists from all over the world. The total prize money is approximately $100,000.

ARIAs : Australian Record Industry Association [ARIA]
The annual ARIAs are held to recognise and encourage excellence in Australian recordings. ARIA issues gold, platinum and multi-platinum accreditations for sound recordings and music videos. ARIA compiles the weekly Coca Cola/ARIA Top 50 singles and albums charts which rank the best selling records in Australia.

Australian Songwriters' Association
Enter the Australian National Song Contest and win $3,350.

City of Bunbury Performing Arts Eisteddfod
A platform for singers and musicians, as well as actors and dancers, in the south-west of Western Australia to perform and be judged by adjudicators.  There are awards for all sections.

International Competitions in Europe
A listing of musical competitions and awards based in Europe, listed by country.  Some of the entries are a little scanty  but contact details are available by emailing the coordinator.  You can also add details of a competition/award of your involvement.

Details music scholarships worth several thousand dollars available to MTA students.
