The State Library is keen to capture the significance to West Australians of this historic moment. ll items contributed to The Apology WA Capture will be made available through our catalogue and will be preserved as part of our collection for the future of all West Australians. The Write Way

The Write Way - Bulletins from Busselton and Beyond
In 2007, the State Library in conjuction with other parties purchased eleven diaries mainly written by Frances Louisa (Fanny) and Joseph Vernon Bussell and two diaries written by John and Georgiana Molloy. The diaries are now available for you to read online.

 

In the Line of Duty In the Line of Duty: Policing in Australia 1788—2006
A Free Exhibition @ Your State Library: 14 June – 17 August 2008

In the Line of Duty is a timeline of important moments in police history presented through documents, images and objects held in police archives and museums, libraries and private collections around the country. In the Line of Duty looks at the wide range of duties that police undertake, from dangerous criminal investigations to community policing, and everything in between.
Australia and Asia’s Richest Literary Award Launched.
The richest literary award in Australia and Asia has been launched by Premier Alan Carpenter. Mr Carpenter said the inaugural Western Australian Premier’s Australia-Asia Literary Award, worth $110,000, had the power to excite and expand the State’s cultural horizons.

“This is a very exciting award that will re-ignite the importance and profile of literature in WA,” Mr Carpenter said.

“A prize of this value will draw the best to WA and help fulfil our vision of providing new opportunities for Western Australians.” Visit the Department of Culture & the Arts website for more information.

Library 2.0 Lecture by Alex Byrne
On January 30, Alex Byrne, the University Librarian at the University of Technology, Sydney conducted an introductory presentation on Library 2.0 technology and the Collaborative Online Workspace (COW). The COW was established by the Libraries of the Australian Technology Network of universities (LATN) as a way of pursuing their priorities whilst providing experiential learning in Library 2.0 technologies. The Collaborative Online Workspace works on a community of practice concept, spaning six university libraries and advances LATNs strategies while sharing learning about Library 2.0. Wanted: Australia’s Missing Newspapers
If there’s a stack of old newspapers gathering dust under the bed or out in the shed, the State Library of Western Australia wants to know about it. The search is on for these valuable pieces of our social history as part of the Australian Newspaper Plan (ANPlan). Some of our most wanted newspapers include the Pilbarra Goldfields News from 1901, the Northam Courier from 1915, the Geraldton Express from 1916, the Swan Express (also from 1916) and issues of Boulder’s Evening Star from 1919. Roadmap to Future Strategies

Roadmap to Future Strategies: an Analysis of the Current Library Workforce in Western Australia
To what extent is the profession in Australia going to be able to face the challenge of demographic change and the predicted shortage of, and competition for, skilled labour? Associate Professor Gillian Hallam discussed key findings from the neXus research project on the 22 November 2007. The project aims to develop a better understanding of the current library and information services workforce in Australia.
A panel of representatives from University, Public and State library sectors, Library Schools and Generation Y discussed their experiences, observations and ideas for the future with audience participation.

    Wednesday Matinee Free Film Screenings @ Your State Library
    The Wednesday Matinee screenings are presented from February to November each year at 12.30pm for your enjoyment. Included in each month's program are `Films From Yesteryear'. Admission is free. Details of the 2008 Program are now available.

    Disability Access and Inclusion Plan
    The State Library of Western Australia is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities, their families and carers have the same opportunities, rights and responsibilities as others to access equitable library and information services.
    To implement this vision the Library has developed a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan.

    Proposed Changes to the Library Board of Western Australia Act 1951
    The Department of Culture and the Arts is currently proposing a package of amendments to cultural institution legislation designed to modernise governance arrangements. One of the Acts under review is the Library Board of Western Australia Act 1951.
    Information Gateways
    New to the Information Gateways, is the Indigenous Researchers Toolkit located under the Aboriginal & Torres Straits Islanders Heading. This tool kit will help get you started with research on Indigenous Australians.
