Australia and Asia’s Richest Literary Award Launched.


The richest literary award in Australia and Asia has been launched by Premier Alan Carpenter. Mr Carpenter said the inaugural Western Australian Premier’s Australia-Asia Literary Award, worth $110,000, had the power to excite and expand the State’s cultural horizons.

“This is a very exciting award that will re-ignite the importance and profile of literature in WA,” Mr Carpenter said.

“A prize of this value will draw the best to WA and help fulfil our vision of providing new opportunities for Western Australians.” Visit the Department of Culture & the Arts website for more information.

2007 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards

Entries are called for the 2007 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards for books / scripts that have been published/produced between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2007.

The Awards have the following categories:

Works that make a major contribution to the understanding of Western Australia's past will also be eligible for the West Australian History Award. Prize-money of $7,500 is awarded to winners in each category and all category winners, and the winner of the West Australian History Award, will be eligible to win the Premier's Prize of $20,000.

Entries for the 2007 Awards have closed. Short listed entries will be announced in April 2008 with the Awards being presented at a gala function in June 2008.

2006 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards

Shaun Tan - The ArrivalOn Friday 08 June 2007 The Minister for Culture and the Arts, Hon Sheila McHale, announced that the book The Arrival by Shaun Tan has won the Premier's Prize in the 2006 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. Ms McHale said the judges had described Mr Tan’s book as an ‘intriguing and elegant artwork’, which captured intimate personal moments and the ‘vast scale of human movement across time, space and cultures’. Shaun Tan also took out the Children’s Book Award category.

Thirty-four books/scripts were shortlisted in seven categories from the 155 entries. Entries were received in the following categories: Fiction, Poetry, Writing for Young Adults, Children’s books, Scripts, Non-fiction and West Australian History. Prize-money of $7,500 is awarded to winners in each category.

Annual literary awards were inaugurated by the Western Australian Government in 1982 to honour and celebrate the literary achievements of Western Australian writers. Until 1990 they were called the WA Week Literary Awards. They are now known as the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. Lists of previous winners can be viewed by year or category.
