Electronic Business Resources
There are a number of electronic resources available for business research in the State Library. Search results from these resources are able to be printed at the same price as photocopying or, in some cases emailed to your own computer.
Australian Shareholders Association
The Australian Shareholders' Association protects and advances the interests of shareholders and investors and liaises with bodies representing other groups of participants in financial markets and the securities industry.
Securities and Derivatives Industry Association
The Securities & Derivatives Industry Association (SDIA) is the peak industry body representing institutional and retail stockbroking firms and investment banks in Australasia. The SDIA strives to promote the high standards, skills and knowledge of securities & derivatives professionals.
Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)
The official Australian Securities Exchange website lists the activities of the Exchange.
ABIX (Australian Business Intelligence Index)
An index to Australian business information including daily newspapers, current business magazines and other assorted business literature. Useful for monitoring latest company and industry developments.
Australian Investment and Securities Commission (ASIC)
Offers Financial Tips and Safety Checks on the website.
Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)
Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the prudential regulator of the Australian financial services industry. APRA oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, friendly societies and most members of the superannuation industry. Lists of approved companies involved in these activities are available from the APRA website.
Business Who’s Who of Australia (Dun and Bradstreet)
The Business Who’s Who database provides information on large and medium sized public and private Australian companies. Details include company history, personnel, annual revenue, industry classification and line of business, product range and tradenames.
Datanalysis
Datanalysis is produced by Aspect Huntley. This data base contains full corporate details of listed and delisted companies. Details include company history and listing details, management, capital history, dividend history, major shareholders and stock quotes. Also included are company announcements and annual reports.
Jobson’s Online
Dun and Bradstreet’s database Jobson’s Online, provides information on industrial and mining companies listed on the Australian and New Zealand Stock Exchanges. The information is updated daily and includes full company details, key personnel, shareholders, main activities and financial tables.
National Information Centre on Retirement Investments (NICRI)
Provides information to investors with modest savings who are investing for retirement or facing redundancy.
Corporate Responsibility Index
A voluntary business led index licensed by the St James Ethics Centre.
The Corporate Responsibility Index is a strategic management tool to enhance the capacity of businesses to develop, measure and communicate best practice in the field of corporate social responsibility. It does this through benchmarking corporate social responsibility strategy and implementation process.
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
The SAM Group in association with Dow Jones Indexes present the Dow Jones Sustainablity Indexes (DJSI) which measure economic, environmental and social performance.
Reputex
Provides social responsibility ratings on a subscription basis for a selection from S&P ASX 300 companies. Includes carbon, governance, environmental, social and workplace practices.
CAROL (Company Annual Reports Online)
Provides an online service offering access to the financial details of listed companies in Europe and the USA. Access is free but you do need to register for access to the annual reports.
Companies House UK
Useful for finding information relating to UK registered companies.
Business Source Premier
One of the Ebscohost suite of databases. It contains information from the international business literature relating to all aspects of business and industry. It includes full text articles, industry reports and company profiles.
Edgar Database
Provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC is the primary regulator of the US securities markets. The Edgar database provides all disclosure documents that companies are required to file.
Hoovers Online
Provides comprehensive company, industry and market intelligence information. The database provides information on approximately 12 million companies with a fee based service for indepth coverage of approximately 40,000 of the world’s top business enterprises.
Proquest Direct ABI Inform database
Provides information from journals and newspapers world wide. It includes full text articles, industry reports and company information.
Report Gallery
America’s largest annual report service. The site provides online access to an extensive range of public company annual reports.
World Federation of Exchanges
Provides a central point for the world securities industry and for the Exchanges themselves. It provides details on all Exchanges and links to each Exchange site.
Commercial Internet Sites
There are an abundance of Internet sites available for monitoring investments. Some of these are provided free but may provide limited information. Many also provide fee based services to track your investments and provide their latest information and analysis.
Examples of commercial Internet services include:
