The Family Album
The Pictorial Collection in the J.S. Battye Library of West Australian history contains over 300,000 images. Among these are many photographs of picnics. Here are a few of them.
Notice how the dress changes from the earliest photographs round the turn of the century when "to go on a picnic" meant an occasion for dressing up in your Sunday best. Yes - even the children ! As we get to the 1920s and 1930s we see the mood slowly relaxing. Ties come off, collars are loosened and the children look a little less restrained.
