Farming the land

Settlement of the eastern wheatbelt and in the South-West was facilitated by the arrival of British migrants in the Group Settlement Scheme.  Over 6,000  were eventually attracted to Western Australia with the promise that they would become prosperous farmers.

Large-scale agricultural expansion in these areas was made possible by a revolution in farming methods thanks to new scientific strains of grain, improved fertilisers and the development of modern farm machinery. These images of Group 2 in Pemberton show settlers growing hops as a cash crop in 1928.
