See what made the news in 2011

The winning entries of the 2012 WA Press Photographer of the Year Awards are now on show at the State Library of Western Australia.

The exhibition gives an eyewitness account of the major news events, exciting sporting moments, fascinating features and compelling portrait images captured by Western Australian photographers over the past year.

Included are entrants from The Sunday Times, The West Australian, the Community Newspaper Group, Post Newspapers, freelancers and regional newspapers.

Sunday Times photographer Theo Fakos took out the WA Press Photographer of the Year prize with a series of four striking images, including one taken of a volunteer fire-fighter during the recent fires in the Margaret River region.

The WA Press Photographer of the Year Awards is the longest running award ceremony of its kind in Australia, with the first event held in 1954.

The exhibition will be on display in The Gallery on the ground floor of the State Library of Western Australia, Perth Cultural Centre until Sunday 1 April.

This year’s awards have been sponsored by the State Library of Western Australia, The West Australian, The Sunday Times, Community Newspaper Group, Fitzgerald Photo Imaging, Canon, SHOOT Photography Workshops, Camera Electronic and Foto Freo.
