Rhinos in the Library!
Original mixed-media illustrations from Patricia Mullins’ children’s book A Crash of Rhinos are now on display in a colourful new exhibition at the State Library of Western Australia.
The book is a celebration of language and collective nouns told through delightful animal illustrations.
How many gorillas do you need to form a band?
How many mosquitoes make you miserable?
How many parrots before you have a pandemonium?
The exhibition, created by the Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program team, is on show in The Place, an area on the Mezzanine level developed especially for children. It’s the home of Better Beginnings headquarters – BBHQ.
Displayed alongside original illustrations, preliminary sketches and drawings from the book will give budding artists an insight into the creation of a children’s book.
Little ones will get the chance to feel the creepy crawly skin of a crocodile and hear a pandemonium of parrots in this interactive and engaging exhibition.
Free craft activities will be hosted by library volunteers between 10am and 2pm from Monday to Friday. These activities are recommended for children aged 3 – 12.
The witty illustrations and clever use of language in A Crash of Rhinos will ensure that word buffs of all ages will also be entertained and amused.
The free exhibition is open to the public until 7 April at the State Library Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday from 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm.
